swcwalks, swcwalk185, Guildford Circular via Albury Mill (western walk). 11/7/24
A very good and varied 10 mile walk in the Surrey Hills, undertaken on a humid afternoon, with sunny intervals.
There's a lot of familiar terrain on this walk, but walked in a different arrangement to incorporate some fresh paths. There's heathland walking, woods, valleys and river-side sections, with lunch being taken at a picnic-site in an old 'Scheduled Ancient Monument' gunpowder mills (a pub option is also available in Chilworth).
The North Downs Way takes the walker past the isolated St Martha-on-the-Hill church, but a different path is taken through Chantry Wood to reach Shalford Mill and then the water meadows next to the River Wey. There's then a familiar path beside the Navigation into Guildford.
A great walk for a sunny day as it has lots of tree cover, and the sandy paths (in many places) were good today.

Country Walking : Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex. 4/7/24
Переглядів 31928 днів тому
Another interesting walk from Country Walking Magazine, in a tranquil corner of South East Essex. A shorter one of 6.5 miles, undertaken on a breezy (some minor wind interference) afternoon with sunny intervals. This walk involves a mini-bus journey from Southminster station, but is definitely 'far from the madding crowd'. This might explain why a nuclear power station was built here (ceased el...

The 170 mile Hertfordshire Way is usually walked via 14 linear sections (there is also a 24 mile extension of two sections), but that makes completing it tricky for solo walkers and non-car drivers. West Herts Ramblers (WHR) seem to have overcome this problem by enabling walkers to complete sections via circular walks, and today's walk is one of those. This 9.6 mile section, starting in Walling...

Another very good walk from 'Country Walking'; this 11.3 miler is adapted from the 2018 founded 'Cuckmere Pilgrim Path' (see cuckmerepilgrimpath.org.uk for more details). It was undertaken on a grey, breezy afternoon and walked in a clock-wise direction from Berwick station. There are 7 churches on this route, but Lullington was missed due to impending rain and the walker taking the lower level...

A decent 11.3 mile walk through the Chilterns, last undertaken in December 2009. It was a cloudy afternoon, with sunny intervals and not much breeze. There are four churches on this walk, and lunch was had at one of them; St John The Baptist, Little Missenden. There are also a number of hostelry lunch and tea options en route. There are some classic Chiltern scenes on this walk, with one decent...

A very pleasant 10 miles, on a decent May afternoon, between the castle town of Arundel and Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex. This was a delightful 10 miles of walking on a glorious May afternoon, with temperatures hitting the 70s and hardly any breeze. It's an amalgamation of the titled walk until the hamlet of Sole Street and then Saturday Walker's Book 1, Walk 53, thereafter. Shortly after leaving Chilham station, it's onto the Stour Valley Walk, briefly, passing the former Mill and then ascending through downland,...

The Fenland landscape might not appeal to all, but this 8.5 mile circuit from Manea station, Cambridgeshire turned out to be an interesting and peaceful one. A delightful 9.7 mile variant of this walk, previously done in December 2010, undertaken on a pleasant, April day with a chill, north-westerly breeze. This variant of the walk starts and finishes at Sandling station, which is about 10 minutes (half a mile) from the GPX track above Hayne Tunnel, on the former Sandgate branch line. Thank you once again amib. In my northern ignorance I have sometimes written off Surrey as just endless suburbia, but your videos have shown me there is still much loveliness there. Let's hope that continues, as some of those views are wonderful. Though the sterility of the countryside becomes ever more disturbing; I honestly cannot remember seeing a butterfly so far this season. And what a poignant plaque at 16.20. Thank you so much

    Another good walk with thoughtful commentary. Have walked in this area a few times but St. Peter’s has always been closed. Appreciated your long look around. I believe it was built in the site of, and used stones from, the Roman fort there. BTW the extension you chose not to do has some challenging navigation. Am sorry to hear about the reduced bus service. I use the very infrequent service from Maldon. The walk to Burnham on Crouch is apparently the most remote section of coast in the country!

    • @amib
      @amib 25 днів тому

      Thanks Liz. Interesting that you've also been there, and more than once! Correct with your history about the site. Maldon has no rail station so I can't link up, but the new D45 might be possible. Why are the marshes challenging? I was planning to walk out from Tillingham for that very remoteness😏 Thanks for watching again😉👍

    Thank you again amib. There were certainly some fierce contrasts on this walk; from that wonderful, evocative chapel and the melancholic estuarine scenery to the caravan park and wind farm horrors. This was an interesting and different walk, I have been all round Southminster and Bradwell ( inc the chapel) in my younger years. I grow common mallow in my garden as it is so pretty. I think the Dengie Peninsula is quite overlooked as a pretty and peaceful place to visit. That Roman road you followed from the chapel is said to be haunted by sounds of Marching Feet ( Roman soldiers perhaps!)

    • @amib
      @amib 28 днів тому

      Interesting Julie. I agree that it's overlooked, but I hope it stays that way; it's hard to find quiet pockets these days. Even Northumberland (on my radar) has been infiltrated. I hope to get back to the Dingle at some point, if the buses permit; a walk from Tillingham, across the marsh, interests, round to Burnham. Thanks for watching again😉👍

    Thank you once again amib for a very pleasant walk. Agree wholeheartedly with the comment below and your reply concerning the desecration of our verges. Their treatment this year up here in West Yorkshire has been a real mixed bag; am not sure as to whether local authorities or their sub-contractors are the chief culprit for the worst examples. Anyway, thank you as always

    Pleasant walk and video, as usual. Even where flowers are present, insects are decidely sparse this year so far. Umbellifer roundels, ragwort and others usually abuzz with all sorts of insects, are almost silent, all due to the prolonged cold, wet spring we've had. In contrast to the verges and greens on your walk, our suburban street verges were left uncut until mid-June, part of the no-mow May policy; but the verges concerned were never sown with wildflower mix, so all we got was rank grass!

    • @amib
      @amib Місяць тому

      Which just goes to show how badly advised our local authorities are; In my experience, they haven't got a clue! Or their sub-contractors haven't, and there's not the council man-power to check the quality of the work being done. 'No-Mow May' is a great idea, but merely the way it used to be (or, when they were manually maintained), until drivers started moaning that it slowed then down (good idea!). As 'Plantlife' suggest, it should continue through until October, but the Councils won't play ball. In my book, it's a shame they can't advise the Councils, as a minimum, as we'll soon have very few insects left in the verges, as you've noted. Thanks for watching again😉👍

    Thank you once again amib. You are right, the fenland landscape is so different from my Pennines ; though it does seem to possess an other worldly beauty, very intriguing. Loved the birdsong and congratulations on the cuckoo ! Apparently the distant views of Ely Cathedral, the " ship of the fens ", can be tremendous. Maybe next time you are in the area. Thank you as always

      If you do a search in my 'catalogue' of old videos, I've done one of Ely, though it doesn't contain views from the top of the cathedral. I've been up there though and the views are great. Yes, a surprisingly interesting walk. Thanks for watching again😉👍

    Nice and peaceful. I was in Beccles that day and it rained pretty much all day so you definitely did well to miss it, Thats definitely a chinese water deer as they have those huge ears

      Yes, I was lucky. Got my tan started that day.😎 I just regret not trying the path past the hides, to get a view of the 'Washes'; views to Ely on a good day, apparently. I concur on the deer, having since checked it. No horns, but tusks. Thanks for watching again😉👍

    Thanks again, another interesting walk and video. Have just returned from a few days on the North Downs way where it is almost completely dry and carpeted with bluebells and other wild flowers; so it seems different to the Aylesbury Vale landscape. I do enjoy your ‘tell it like it is’ commentary style. Let’s hope the walking season has properly begun without more bad weather and train strikes.

      Pleasure Liz. Yes, let's hope so, though the renationalisation plans being mooted for the railways concern me; I remember BR and wildcat strikes! I like the sound of 'Open Access', but that seems unlikely. Rock and a hard place!😒 No walk this week, but thanks for watching again😉👍

    That is the Chappel Viaduct in the painting but it’s not an accurate image, it was something that was commissioned in the 90s by the rail users group at the time which includes features of all locations on the route.

    Thank you again amib. Loved those woodlands, heathland landscapes and the birdsong; redolent of Surrey or Dorset. And thank you for illustrating the new build blight as well; this is why your walks are the most interesting on UA-cam. I want to see England as it is, not another sanitised National Park jaunt. Wonderful stuff, thank you as always

      Thanks Gillian. Yes, it does have a lot in common with Surrey, as I mentioned, though no Dartford Warblers, interestingly🤔And yes again, I do tend to highlight the demise of our 'Sceptred Isle' as I'm now old enough to do so😒 Thanks for watching again😉👍

      Yes, not one of my regular haunts Julie, but variety is the spice and they do come up on my radar occasionally😏Glad you seem to like the canalboat life, but I couldn't live on one; too damp! Thanks for watching again😉👍

      Cheers Dave. Yes, a decent sortie. I did stray from the original GPX track to reach the church, meaning less of the locks was filmed, but I think it all turned out well in the end. As it did for City, as you say, unfortunately😤 Thanks for watching again😉👍

    Thank you again amib for a lovely walk in an area I don't know at all. I have always found rural towpath walks to be very soothing and restful and this was no exception. Lovely church thrown in as well. Do hope the weather improves so you can enjoy what is left of bluebell season. Thanks again

    Thank you so much amib..... and well done for negotiating those tricky sections ! But what a fascinating walk, dripping with history and surely one of your best ! A tantalising glimpse of spring and those views from Lympne looked stunning. What a place, that church tower looked more forbidding than the castle ! By the way, think Saltwood Castle was the home of Alan Clark, the controversial Tory MP and diarist. Thank you so much, really enjoyed this
